FAMIL USA has an existing custom-coded React website that is functional and does not require a complete rebuild. We would like to improve one key part of the visitor experience: our gallery and storytelling content.
We have photographs, video, and stories from the Afghan National Strike Unit community and would like to turn the existing gallery into a more engaging, interactive multimedia experience. Our goal is to help an average American visitor understand who the NSU were, their relationship with the United States, and why their story still matters today.
The existing site is a React application styled with Bootstrap and hosted on Vercel. We are looking for a volunteer comfortable working within an existing React codebase who can combine front-end development with strong visual and user-experience instincts.

Design and implement an improved multimedia gallery within FAMIL’s existing React website. The finished section should accommodate photographs, captions or short stories, and video; be intuitive on desktop and mobile; and provide a more engaging way for visitors to explore the NSU story.
We would also like a visually prominent link or preview on the homepage that draws visitors into the gallery. We are open to the volunteer’s recommendations about the best structure and presentation.

Organization Mission

FAMIL is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting members of the Afghan National Strike Units (NSU) and their families. The NSU were elite Afghan units who fought alongside U.S. military and intelligence personnel throughout America's twenty-year war in Afghanistan. During the 2021 evacuation of Kabul, they continued protecting American troops until the final withdrawal before many were resettled in the United States through legal immigration. FAMIL's motto is "Helping Those Who Helped Us." Operating with a small staff and limited budget, we help NSU families navigate immigration paperwork, access medical and mental health care, find employment, and integrate into American culture.
